The Joy of Community

COVID–19––a phrase that has become all too familiar for us. To some it brings a sense of fear, stress or anger. To others––laughter, love, boredom or maybe even creativity. Whatever feelings this pandemic and time brings you, one thing is certain... our sense of community has grown stronger. Together we have uplifted one another, connected with each other and have brightened many days.

The definition of community during this time has grown like never before. Before when I thought of community, I thought about my neighbors, my block or even our district. Now I find myself including people in my community that live in other states, time zones and countries. It is certain that physically the world is apart, but emotionally we have never been closer.

Together every country, state and person is fighting for the same goal ... to defeat this pandemic. The good news? Community progresses, but the fight has to continue. Here are some ways you can help out your community during this time.

  • Connecting - One of the easiest ways to help your community is by staying connected with the people you love AND the ones that love you. Many different platforms are available for free to make this happen such as: Zoom, Teams, Messenger, IG video chat and fun, app––House party.

  • Giving Back - Have tons of clothes you can give away? Extra food you can part with? Giving of yourself is always an amazing way to help the community and feel accomplished. Many soup kitchens are still open and are in need of food and volunteers, local churches are also in need of the same as they band together to give back. Tons of local thrift stores are still accepting reusable items.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Cyndi Galley, has done this very thing on Facebook LIVE with her "Be Blessed-&-Dressed Boutique POP-UP," ...hosting give-aways of our Fashoned's closet and wardrobe, giving to others who may be in need of clothing!

  • Services - Maybe you don't have any goods to give, but you have a particular set of skills you can offer. Maybe your good at carpentry, plumbing, art, sewing, cooking, baking or even shopping. There are people who physically cannot go to the store, but you can. Think about the lives you can touch and impact by sharing your God-given skills.

  • Acts of Love - Deliver some flowers to random people, set up your own food bank in front of your house, deliver notes of love and encouragement. Spend time with people who may be lonely or in need of pick-me-up. We all have something we can give.

When this pandemic will be over is uncertain, but what is certain is that the power of community is a very strong bond that no virus can ever break.
