National Nurses Week

We love our nurses.

National Nurses Week occurs from May 6 to May 12 this year.

The theme for the 2021 resource is Nurses: A Voice to Lead - A vision for future healthcare. In 2021, we seek to show how nursing will look into the future as well as how the profession will transform the next stage of healthcare.

A Nurse's Journey
Gloria Jarin, Orange County

Gloria is a nurse that happens to be a Filipino.
Filipinos and Nurses.

Decades ago late 1800-1900, Filipino are trained and recruited by US armies as volunteer auxiliary workers to treat tropical diseases post-war, others were sent to the US for further training and employment, Philippines is largely recruited nurses maybe because our nursing Education is patterned with the US and all our curriculum is in English so it's not new to us and US, they been there in the Philippines during war and Philippines is largely recruited for nurses.

The Philippines was given exchange study programs, given working visas to work here. I was not on one of those I was blessed to be sponsored by my dad to come legally without thinking what would I do if my visas expired. Mostly nowadays influx has increased because every nurse wants to come so they can support their families back home.

I haven't faced racism so far.

In my role as a nurse, I do mostly bedside, I did not even think of aiming for the management position, which requires further education which I never thought of after my kids were born.

Day in the life of a Nurse:
A day is sometimes stressful, I worked in a Department where a condition of a pt change dramatically and needed quick intervention or discernment before it happens, have to be flexible in a way some patients are behaviorally challenging need a lot of patience and compassion.

It wasn't my first choice to be a nurse. I would like to be a flight attendant or work in the office, I was still in the Philippines then but because of chances of coming to the US a brother of mine said I need to study nursing because I had a greater chance of getting a job here I was in high school then, so I was encouraged to pursue nursing. My role model is my parents, they worked hard to send us to school.

Hardships/heartbreaking news while at work: The death of my husband and brother while in the Philippines due to MVA.(1996)

How do you evangelize or share the gospel of Jesus Christ to a patient or their family member?
We were issued to not express our faith, I don't just ask them if they are a believer I kinda work on issues on their health versus their healing so if I heard they know Jesus I just reinforce it and pray for them but I have to ask their permission, some patients are sensitive and I don't want to stir any issues.

People are saying nurses are superheroes, what is your take on that statement?
Well because we are the ones on the front lines in this pandemic.

Covid:
As a parent, my kids are important to me.
about Covid, I think is overblown, the lockdown has an impact on us, for example, me, less motivation to exercise, it's only lately that I pick it up so if you are not a believer probably going to sink into depression, for example, I think we have to exercise our wisdom, not to be fearful as a believer, I think sometimes we trust man more than GOD.
